[요하네스버그=AP/KNS통신] 넒은 마음씨와 밝은 미소를 가진 꼬마요정 같은 이 아이는 스스로를 ‘퍼스트 레이디’라 부르며 미래에 대한 꿈을 간직하고 있다. 그러나 의사들은 남아프리카 공화국 출신의 12살 소녀 온트라메체 팔라체가 아마 1-2년밖에 더 살지 못할 것이라 말한다.
“내가 스스로를 퍼스트레이디라 부르는 이유는 내가 이 병을 가진 첫 번째 흑인이기 때문”이라고 설명하는 소녀는 노화 과정을 촉진시키는 치명적인 유전적 조건을 타고난 이들에게 나타나는 희소병인 선천성 조로증을 진단 받은 첫 흑인 아이라고, 조로증 연구재단이 밝혔다.
아이가 조숙하게 노화되는 것을 알게 되자, 온트라메체의 아버지는 아이가 3살일 때 가족을 버리고 떠났다.
비록 자주 병에 걸리지만 온트라메체는 6세의 나이에 학교에 입학해 총명한 학생으로 생활하고 있다. 그러나 반 친구들과, 교사들을 비롯해 그녀가 이토록 작고 마른 것은 에이즈에 감염되었기 때문이라 믿는 사람들로부터 종종 멸시를 받고 있다. 남아프리카 공화국은 세계에서 가장 많은 에이즈 감염자들이 살고 있으나 여전히 이 질환은 사회적인 오명을 지니고 있다.
“심리학자가 되고 싶다”고 말하는 소녀는 “그래서 다른 사람들의 문제점을 고쳐서 그들이 내가 내 자신을 받아들이듯이 자신의 본 모습을 받아들일 수 있도록 해주고 싶다”고 밝혔다.

(Johannesburg, AP) The elfin child with the big personality and bright smile calls herself "the first lady" and dreams of the future. But doctors say 12-year-old Ontlametse Phalatse has only, perhaps, another couple of years to live.
"I call myself a first lady because I'm the first black child with this disease ... Which other black child do you know with this disease?" she challenged. Ontlametse is the first black child diagnosed with progeria, a rare and fatal genetic condition that accelerates the aging process, the Progeria Research Foundation said.
As the child aged prematurely, her father abandoned the family when Ontlametse was 3 years old.
Despite her frequent illnesses, Ontlametse enrolled in school at 6 and proved a bright pupil. But she was often scorned by classmates, teachers and others who thought she was so small and skinny because she had AIDS. South Africa has the highest number of people living with AIDS of any country but the disease still carries a terrible social stigma.
"I would like to be a psychologist," she says, "so that I can work on the problems of other people and so that they can accept the way that they are because they can see that I accept the way I am."
